- At present , the average age of Indian Army is 32 years and scheme targets to bring this down to 26 years.
- Under the scheme 45,000 - 50,000 men and women will be recruited annually into the forces for a term of 4 years.
- However , the scheme will absorb back best of 25% of agniveers into respective services after 4 years and would be allowed to serve for another 15 years.

- The scheme aims to recruit non commissioned personnel into the three services.
Advantages of being Agniveers
- They will get a life insurance cover of rupees 48 lakh for a term of 4 years.
- In case of death the individual will be compensated with an amount of Rupees 1 Crore including the salary of remaining unserved tenure.
- The government will help to rehabilitate the soldiers who are decommissioned from the service after 4 years, by providing them with bridge courses and skill certificates.
- A reservation of 10% has been announced by ministry of home affairs in CAPF for agniveers after 4 years of tenure.
- Upon completion of 4 years of service period, a one time "Seva Niddhi" package of 11.71 lakhs would be allotted to Agniveers.
Concerns related to the Scheme
- The Agniveers on will be recruited on basis of short service commission and after the successful completion of tenure they will be paid a lump sum amount of 11.71lakhs and no pension.
- However , after completion of four years it will be difficult to find a job to support themselves and their families.
- According to retired veteran of armed forces, the scheme will not be able to make justice with their motto of " नाम, नमक, निशान". They say in a tenure of 4 years it won't be possible to develop a bond between the soldiers.
- Also, many veteran argue on the topic that it take years of rigorous training to shape an individual into a perfect war ready soldier. It takes a minimum 3 years to train a good pilot, 5 years to train a good technician, 10 years to make a highly skilled special force operative, intelligence officers are trained for a least of 10 years to be productive on ground. And in such a small duration the scheme won't provide the forces with skilled soldiers.
- The scheme would result the forces to lose skilled soldiers.
Significance of such step for the country
- The country will be able to make patriotic ,skilled and disciplined young men ,who can serve the country in their young ages and also inspire a lot many to join the forces.
- In a country of such huge population , it's next to impossible for the government to bear the expenses of compulsory military training for its citizen.
- In a country like Israel , every citizen is a trained military personnel who had served in the Israeli forces , it could be made possible for the less population of the country.
- In present day situation when India should be prepared for 2.5 front war , it is necessary to maintain a young and energetic force combat ready.
- The decommissioned solider can act as a medium to propagate patriotic messages into the society , thereby could help to prevent religious riots by prioritizing country before religion.
- The country will always have a trained soldiers ready.
- Also there will b a decrease in the percentage of salary and pension the govt spends on the military , and thereby a major chunk of defense expenditure an be used in the modernization of our forces.
Employment Opportunities
- This will lead to more jobs and thereby the trained and disciplined soldiers after their 4 years of tenure will be employed in various field.
" Though the armed forces are recruiting , but one mush not join the forces as a mean of employment opportunity to have job, the forces are the respectful organization in service to the nation, join only if you are physically and mentally strong enough to tackle the hurdles and make your way."
-CDS Bipin Rawat
Higher Skilled Workforce
- This will lead to availability of higher skilled workforce for the economy which which will help in gaining productivity and increasing overall GDP
